JUMP Bike Interface
Redesigning the Bike Share Checkout Experience

JUMP Bikes, now owned by Uber Technologies, Inc., is a US-based bicycle and scooter sharing company. In 2017, Tomorrow Lab engaged with JUMP to redesign their bicycle’s user interface and checkout / check-in process. The goal of this project was to move away from JUMP’s existing keypad, LCD display, and U-lock, and instead offer a dead simple RFID tap and electric/cable lock as the primary means to check-out and check-in the bicycle.

01 — User Experience Mapping

The design process started with a complete review of the JUMP Bike’s existing user experience and interface design for checking out and checking a bike. We prioritized information between what needed to be ‘on bike’ and what could be off boarded to a mobile app to be used on the user’s smart phone.

02 —User Interface Design

Next, we conducted iterative user interface wire framing for both the on-bike interface and in-app interface to accommodate all necessary information display and input. Once the wireframes were complete, we translated the wireframes into fully designed interfaces including placement, scale, color, and pattern decisions.

03 —Product Architecture

During the Mechanical Engineering phase, we developed a product architecture to merge the electronics strategy and the interface design. We specified appropriate material stack-up and paint patterns. Water sealing strategies were implemented across the product architecture.
