This custom interactive touchscreen system was developed for a new wine store situated in Long Island, New York. While this device was part of a larger branding and website project for the company, this interactive touchscreen was a major asset for the store, setting it apart from many other stores.
The system is completely custom and comprised of a Mac mini, 27" ELO touchscreen monitor, a barcode scanner, and printer. The system is held in a custom cherry wood table to match the interior of the wine store.
The client's requirements for the system were to have a customized inventory for browsing and searching, allow customers to build and print a 'wishlist', and allow customers to scan bottles in order to read more about the product.
The design of the enclosure for the device was a simple, open-air table format. As a table, multiple users are able to stand around and partake in the experience while facing each other and conversing. A vertically-mounted monitor creates a computer-to-human wine exploration experience, while the horizontally-mounted monitor creates a human-to-human experience.
Michael Doherty programmed a database system that allowed the client to update the system's entire inventory and information using a Google Spreadsheet. This means the system is completely updatable through a web browser! Michael also facilitated a smart printing system allowing users to print their wishlists.
Alongside being project manager for the larger project, Tomorrow Lab lead the concept, wireframe, and design of the interface and the custom furniture piece. Tomorrow Lab coded the systeml entirely in Flash using Actionscript. This allowed a copy of the system to reside online for at-home users.
